Iatro-genicide

An ounce of prevention is…PRICELESS!

According to the "Journal of the American Medical Association," Vol 284, July 26, 2000, iatrogenic causes constitute the third leading cause of deaths in America, behind cancer and heart disease. Iatrogenic is defined as "induced in a patient by a physician's activity, manner, or therapy--especially as a complication of treatment." The fact of the matter is that according to the JAMA article, 250,000 people die per year from iatrogenic causes. This figure is up 236% from the figure reported in 1994.

The breakdown of yearly deaths look like this:

12,000 ---unnecessary surgery
7,000 ---medication errors in hospitals
20,000 ---other errors in hospitals
80,000 ---infections in hospitals
106,000 ---non-error, negative effects of drugs

In addition, 2.2 million Americans have been seriously injured. Another analysis concluded that 4% to 18% of patients experienced negative effects from treatment in outpatient settings, including the following:

116 million extra physician visits
77 million extra prescriptions
17 million emergency department visits
8 million hospitalizations
3 million long-term admissions
199,000 additional deaths
$77 billion in extra costs

To make the statistics worse, according to Medwatch, less than 1 percent of all serious drug reactions are reported to the FDA.

But, we still have the finest healthcare system in the world, right? Not according to the World Health Organization. Out of 13 industrial nations ranked, the US scored:

13th (last) for low-birth-weight percentages
13th for neonatal mortality and infant mortality overall
 11th for postneonatal mortality
13th for years of potential life lost (excluding external causes)
11th for life expectancy at 1 year for females, 12th for males
10th for life expectancy at 15 years for females, 12th for males
10th for life expectancy at 40 years for females, 9th for males
7th for life expectancy at 65 years for females, 7th for males

In a followup study, the World Health Organization ranked the US healthcare system 15th out of 25 countries. One might conclude, then, that Americans as a whole practice poor lifestyle habits: we smoke, drink, and eat a lot of fat. We do, but that fact does not account for the above scores. Look at these statistics:

The proportion of females who smoke ranges from 14% in Japan to 41% in Denmark; in the United States, it is 24% (fifth lowest). For males, the range is from 26% in Sweden to 61% in Japan; it is 28% in the United States (third lowest).

The US ranks fifth lowest for alcoholic beverage consumption.

The US has relatively low consumption of animal fats--fifth lowest in men aged 55-64 years, out of 20 industrialized countries--and the third lowest mean cholesterol concentrations in men aged 50 to 70 years, out of 13 industrialized countries.

Certainly we cannot blame a lack of technology.  Among 29 countries, the United States ranks second behind Japan in the availability of magnetic resonance imaging units (MRIs) and computed tomography scanners per million population. Japan ranks highest in health, whereas the United States ranks among the lowest. There is however, a difference in what happens after an MRI diagnosis. The high usage of technology in Japan is limited to diagnostic equipment, and is not matched by high rates of treatment. On the other hand, in the US, high use of diagnostic equipment may be linked to more treatment.

Don’t get me wrong, modern medicine does have its place. But over-reliance on the system and lack of personal responsibility will increasingly put the odds against you. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR HEALTH! Eat more organic fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds (and less processed and animal foods). Drink plenty of purified water (half your body weight in ounces); get plenty of sunshine; do cardiovascular (I think rebounding is best), strength (I like nautilus equiptment) and flexibility (try yoga) exercises; clean your colon; skin brush every day; breath deep clean air (invest in an air purifier); visualize yourself as young and healthy; think positive thoughts; meditate (meditation sets you up so you don’t get upset; love yourself (tell yourself in the mirror how much you love yourself every morning and night); find your purpose and live your dreams; learn 1000 jokes and laugh more; help someone everyday; forgive yourself and anyone who has hurt you. True healing can never occur with a pill or a surgery, because there is no magic pill, only a magic process. This magic process is the body’s ability to heal itself of anything. But this loving hand of grace needs the touch of self effort and discipline of your thoughts, words and actions. Learn about natural healing; seek ought natural solutions first and if you do need a doctor, look for one who is more holistically oriented.
